Charting Your
Intervention Course: The Art and Science of Goal Setting
The goal setting
is a heart of professional development of a teacher.
So, there are
three types of essential progress monitoring-data:
1.
General
outcome measure
2.
Skill
specific data (word reading accuracy, phonics patterns, fluency, comprehension)
3.
Intervention-specific
data
In order to have
good results we need to select some measures based upon observed challenges.
For that we need to set a GOM goal for students:
·
Obtain
or use baseline date;
·
Consider
team’s desired destination;
·
Set
goal and determine needed weekly rate of improvement to reach the goal;
·
Use
goal setting tools included with three assessments.
We also should
set a skill-specific goal based on the students’ primary challenge. Then we
need to set a mastery measure goal for students. In the end the teacher analyzes
progress-monitoring data. It is important to consider changes needed. The
teacher can also share the results with parents, list concepts mastered and
provide an overall comment regarding progress.
It is essential
to plan each step in goal setting and to aim at improving learning and teaching
as well.
